Abstract

Student engagement is essential for fostering active and meaningful learning. However, fifth-grade students often demonstrate limited participation in Natural and Social Sciences (IPAS) learning, particularly in classroom discussions, asking and answering questions, and collaborative activities. This study aims to improve students' learning engagement in IPAS through the implementation of the Gallery Walk method.

This study employed Classroom Action Research (CAR) conducted in two cycles, each consisting of two meetings. Each cycle involved planning, action, observation, and reflection. The participants were 28 fifth-grade students at SD Negeri Bangetayu Kulon. Data were collected through observation and documentation and analyzed using descriptive qualitative and quantitative techniques to assess changes in student engagement across the research cycles.

The findings revealed a consistent improvement in student engagement following the implementation of the Gallery Walk method. The average engagement score increased from 62 in the pre-cycle to 68 in Cycle I and 81 in Cycle II. Furthermore, the proportion of students achieving good or very good engagement levels increased from 17.85% in the pre-cycle to 50% in Cycle I and 85.71% in Cycle II. These improvements indicate greater student participation in discussions, presentations, collaborative learning, and classroom interactions.

The Gallery Walk method effectively improved fifth-grade students' engagement in IPAS learning by encouraging active participation, collaborative discussion, knowledge sharing, and peer interaction. These findings suggest that Gallery Walk can serve as an alternative instructional strategy for promoting more interactive, participatory, and collaborative learning environments in elementary schools.
